HISTORY OF THE SONOMA RACEWAY

Sonoma Raceway, located in the heart of California’s wine country, is one of the most unique tracks on the NASCAR schedule. Opened in 1968 as Sears Point Raceway, the track has hosted a wide range of motorsport events over the years, including NASCAR, IndyCar, NHRA drag racing, and sports car championships.

NASCAR first came to Sonoma in 1989 with the Cup Series, bringing stock car racing to the twisting 12-turn road course for the first time. Unlike the typical oval tracks, Sonoma challenges drivers with elevation changes, tight corners, and a technical layout that demands precision and patience. Over the years, the track became famous for its dramatic races and close-quarters battles, especially in the final few turns. Notable winners include legends like Jeff Gordon, who grew up nearby, and Tony Stewart, both mastering the art of road course racing.

Besides NASCAR, Sonoma Raceway has been a staple for NHRA drag racing since the 1980s, hosting some of the biggest names in the sport at its state-of-the-art quarter-mile strip. IndyCar also competed at Sonoma for several years, with the track often serving as a season finale. In sports car racing, Sonoma has seen action from series like IMSA and SCCA, offering thrilling endurance and sprint races.

The facility itself has evolved through the decades, with major upgrades to its garages, grandstands, and fan areas, but it has always kept its scenic charm. Today, Sonoma Raceway remains a beloved stop for racing fans, offering a perfect mix of top-level competition and a relaxed, scenic setting.
