TRAFFIC RULES IN CALIFORNIA, USA

Whether you're a local or visiting from out of state, it’s smart to know the basic driving rules in California to avoid any unexpected issues. Here’s a simple guide to help you stay on the right side of the law while enjoying the NASCAR action in Sonoma.

Driving side

In California, like the rest of the U.S., vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Speed limits

Speed limits vary by area:

  • Residential areas: 25–30 mph
  • State highways: 55–65 mph
  • Interstates: Up to 70 mph, depending on the stretch

Always obey posted signs and adjust your speed based on traffic, road, and weather conditions.

Traffic signals

Drivers must follow all traffic signals. Right turns on red are allowed after a complete stop, unless signs say otherwise. Always yield to pedestrians and cross traffic when turning.

Driving under the influence

California has strict DUI laws. The legal BAC limit is 0.08% for drivers over 21, and there is zero tolerance for those under 21. DUI offenses carry serious penalties, including heavy fines, license suspension, and possible jail time.

Seat belts

All passengers – front and back – must wear seat belts by law. California enforces this strictly, and violations can lead to fines.

Right of way

Drivers must yield to:

  • Pedestrians in crosswalks
  • Vehicles have already stopped or are at uncontrolled intersections (yield to the right or to whoever arrived first). Be extra cautious near the speedway, where foot traffic increases on race days.

If you are stopped by police in California

  • Pull over safely: Use your signal and move to the right side of the road. Try to stop in a well-lit area.
  • Stay in your car: Keep your seat belt fastened, hands on the steering wheel, and avoid sudden movements. If it’s dark, turn on your interior light.
  • Follow directions: Wait for the officer to approach. Only reach for your license, registration, and insurance when asked.
  • Be respectful: Stay calm and polite. Cooperate without arguing.
  • If ticketed: Stay calm and sign the ticket if requested. Signing is not an admission of guilt – it just confirms you received it.
  • Know your rights: You can ask if you are free to go. You are not required to answer additional questions beyond providing your ID and documents.
  • Document the stop: If something feels wrong, note the officer’s name, badge number, and vehicle information. You can file a complaint later if needed.
